The Brief
We love Barney Martin… there – we said it… again! A boutique hairdresser in the heart of Surry Hills that has an air of old-town London feel about it. Barney and his staff have embraced their brand by removing the shackles and seeking innovation from us as designers.
Their brief to us went a little like this: “We don’t build websites… we cut hair. So do what you do best and promise you won’t try and tell us how to taper a bob”. Okay, so we’re paraphrasing but ultimately they took our Manifesto to heart and trusted us.
The Brief
This site was F.U.N. to design and build – a perfect example of spilling grey matter into pixels. We had a vision, took it to task and pushed it out to the interwebs like a well-coiffed beehive.
We imbued all the character of the salon and used that as the base of the design; creating an environment rather than just a website. This means new and returning customers get the Barney Martin experience even when they’re not in the salon.
Art direction for photography meant that we could combine this with location shots to create a user-experience that brought the user into the salon.
The site was developed with WordPress (open-source) CMS – with the staff at BM taking the site by the pigtails and updating it regularly with a strong Facebook and Twitter presence.
The Result
Barney’s website is proving to be an engaging experience, turning surfing strangers into happy clients and new friends.
The site was awarded ‘Outstanding Achievement’ at the 2010 IMA Awards.
